  • A doorway in Ta Prohm to a temple built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries as a monastery and university. The door is surrounded by silk cotton tree roots encased by strangler figs roots, which develop their own underground root system. They then grow quickly, often strangling the host tree, which in time dies and rots away. The strangler fig continues to exist as a hollow tubular lattice that provides shelter for many forest animals. Siem Reap, Cambodia, 2003

  • Big Chute Marine Railway, a ship lift at Lock 44 of the Trent-SevernWaterway in Ontario. It works on an inclined plane to carry boats in a cradle over a change 18m high. Although a conventional lock would have been simpler, the marine railway was chosen to prevent the possible migration of sea lamprey from Georgian Bay into the Trent-Severn system. Built in 1977.   • The Amphitheatre of Pompeii is the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatre. It hosted gladiatorial games and other events. Seating was divided into three distinct social groupings and protection from the sun was provided by velaria suspended above the crowd from the top of the arena. The city known as the.Pearl of the Adriatic was heavily shelled during the break-up of Yugoslavia in 1991..During the siege of Dubrovnik two-thirds of the town's old buildings were damaged..Today the roofs are a patchwork of restored and original tiles. Barking Creek Tidal Barrier, which resembles a giant guillotine, was built over four years and completed in 1983. It is about 60m high, which allows shipping to reach the Town Quay in Barking further upstream. The barrier crosses the Barking Creek reach of the River Roding at its confluence with the Thames.   • Red tiles, shaped and patterned like fish scales, on the roof of the National.Museum of Cambodia, constructed 1917-24 and inspired by Khmer temple architecture. The roof tiles have sections offset for ventilation, which incidentally provide entry and exit points for bats.   • The Gallarus Oratory (Irish: Séipéilín Ghallarais meaning "The Church of the Place of the Foreigners") is believed to be an early Christian church built between the 6th and 9th centuries. It has a corbelled roof and is built with stones laid at a slight angle - lower on the outside than on the inside - to allow rainwater to run off and thus keep the interior relatively dry despite the lack of mortaring. The building has remained in excellent condition for 1300 years. Dingle Peninsula, Ireland, 1991

  • The main road known as the Stradun, constructed entirely of marble in 1468.and reconstructed after the 1667 earthquake. The smooth surface reflects the street lights at night and becomes glass-like after rain. The city was shelled in 1991 to 1992 during the CroatianWar of Independence. This left the street pock marked as can be seen at the lower left of the photograph. A more recent patina has been added by chewing gum and a pistachio shell. Dubrovnik, Croatia, 2005

The door and window mouldings demonstrate Litema, the mural art of the Basotho. The hut floor and window mouldings are made from Daga, a mix of earth and dung.
